Article Content: (COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Team USA is currently enjoying a six-bout winning streak at the 2011 World Championships following a 4-0 performance on Sunday in Baku, Azerbaijan. Two-time Olympian and 2007 World Champion Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio) and super heavyweight Lenroy “Cam” Thompson (Lenexa, Kansas) both notched their first wins of the tournament while welterweight Errol Spence (Desoto, Texas) and light heavyweight Marcus Browne (Staten Island, N.Y.) each recorded their second victory of the 2011 World Championships in Sunday’s action.

Warren opened competition for the U.S. squad in a bout with Georgy Chygayev of Ukraine. The first round between the two experienced boxers was slow paced with Warren taking a 4-2 lead after the opening stanza. The pace quickened in the second round as both boxers scored seven points to move the score to an 11-9 margin in favor of Warren. The two-time Olympian left no doubt in the third round, outscoring Chygayev 11-6 to win a 22-15 decision and move one step closer to a second world title. Warren will return to the ring for a flyweight match-up with Rey Saludar of the Philippines in Tuesday’s 7 p.m. (10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT) session.

Browne was the second U.S. boxer to take the ring, and he looked to build on the momentum of his first round bout, which featured a first round stoppage on the lone punch thrown in the contest. Yet his second victory wouldn’t come as easily as he faced off with Georgia’s Levan Guledani in light heavyweight action. Browne trailed by a 4-3 margin after the first, but he didn’t allow the deficit to distract him from his game plan. He grabbed the lead in the second round, taking his own 8-5 advantage into the final stanza of boxing. Browne held onto his lead over the final three minutes to win a 10-6 decision and advance to a third round match-up with 2009 Heavyweight World Champion Egor Mekhontsev of Russia in Tuesday’s 11 a.m. (2 a.m. ET/11 p.m.) session.

Spence and Thompson both competed in evening action in Baku and won their second round bouts by identical margins. It was Spence who took the ring first as he battled Canada’s Clayton Custio in a welterweight preliminary round contest. The two boxed to a 4-4 tie after one but Spence took control of the bout in the second round, grabbing a 12-7 lead with three minutes remaining. He kept the pressure up in the final round en route to an 18-9 final decision and a berth in the third round. Spence will battle Hungary’s Imre Backsai in Tuesday evening competition.

Thompson was the final U.S. boxer to compete in the 2011 World Championships and he opened competition in a showdown with Australia’s Alexey Muhkin on Sunday night. The U.S. super heavyweight took the early lead in their bout, claiming a 6-3 edge after the first three minutes of action. He slowly extended his advantage over the three rounds of action, holding an 11-7 lead after two. Thompson enjoyed his highest scoring round in the third and won an 18-9 final decision in his World Championships debut. He will return to action on Tuesday evening in a bout with 2004 Olympic silver medalist and 2009 World Championships bronze medalist Viktar Zuyev of Belarus.

Monday’s full day of bouts will be the toughest of the tournament to this point for Team USA as five U.S. boxers compete in second round action and three face a former Olympic or World Championships medalist. Flyweight Eros Correa (San Jose, Calif.) has been off for a full week after claiming his first win of the tournament last Monday. He will battle 2008 Olympian and 2009 World Championships silver medalist David Ayrapetyan of Russia on Monday.

Lightweight Jose Ramirez (Avenal, Calif.) will face the most decorated opponent of the bunch in his second round contest against reigning Olympic and World Champion Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine. Lomachenko is competing in his first major international event at lightweight after previously campaigning at the featherweight division.

Bantamweight Joseph Diaz, Jr. (S. El Monte, Calif.) will battle 2004 Olympic silver medalist Worapoj Petchkoom of Thailand in his second bout of the tournament on Monday. Middleweight Jesse Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.) will face Tajikistan’s Sobirjon Nazarov following his first round win on Saturday while heavyweight Joseph Williams (Queens, N.Y.) challenges Kazakhstan’s Vassiliy Levit after a week of inaction in Baku.

USA Boxing National Coach Joe Zanders (Long Beach, Calif.), coaches Ronald Simms (Stafford, Va.) and Manny Robles (Los Angeles, Calif.), technical advisor Ken Porter (Akron, Ohio), and Team Manager Ken Buffington (Marshalltown, Iowa) are leading the United States team in Baku.

The 2011 World Championships are the first international qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympic Games, and the light flyweight through light heavyweight boxers must place in top ten to qualify for London while the heavyweight and super heavyweight competitors need to place in the top six.

Protesters decrying corporate greed and other grievances maintained a presence in New York City’s financial district Sunday, one day after more than 700 of them were arrested as they attempted to march across the Brooklyn Bridge.

The group “Occupy Wall Street” has been camped out for two weeks. On Saturday, the Brooklyn Bridge was shut down for several hours as protesters rallied against what they said was corporate greed, social inequality and other issues.

New York police said the protesters were arrested when they broke off from the bridge’s pedestrian lane and onto the roadway, blocking traffic. The majority were issued citations for disorderly conduct and released.

The killing of extremist cleric Anwar al Awlaki in a U.S. drone attack in Yemen last week highlights the close ties between Washington and Sana’a. President Ali Abdullah Saleh has cast his leadership as critical to U.S. counter-terrorist efforts, and warned of chaos should his numerous opponents force him from power. But the U.S. may still have potential allies in Yemen if Saleh were to leave the scene.

President Saleh has never been the perfect partner in counter-terrorism. Too many extremists were released or “escaped” from Yemeni prisons for America’s taste. But for years he has said he is the last line of defense against the threat of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. And the U.S. responded with military and economic help that, intentionally or not, gave Saleh far more strength than his opponents believe he deserved.

Disappointment with U.S.

Many of the anti-government protests rocking Yemen this year do not have anti-Americanism as their root. But according to Hakkim al Masmari, an editor and columnist in Sana’a, demonstrators watched the U.S. reaction to other popular uprisings across the region and frustration set in.

“The pro-democracy students are very ashamed at what the U.S. is doing. They feel that the U.S. is not playing it fair. They feel that the U.S. is not acting democratic and the U.S. is now supporting a dictator at a time when its called for democracy.”

Washington has said it supports reform, and backs a Gulf Cooperation Council proposal that would see a peaceful transition of power in Yemen. How forcefully U.S. officials press for that change, especially in the wake of the cooperation that led to al Awlaki’s death, is unclear. But Stephen Steinbeiser, with the American Center for Yemen Studies in Sana’a, says the potential for a partnership remains.

“The pro-democracy students identify themselves as being kind of the closest allies in Yemen that the U.S. currently has. They dismiss the current regime as being undemocratic, and they point to others as simply not adhering to U.S. democratic ideals. But they are untested. And so it would really take some time to organize some political strengths and identify some strong leaders and only then begin to really articulate a policy that the U.S. would be interested in working with.”

Engaging others within the opposition

The U.S. has been working with other groups in Yemen. Editor Masmari says the outreach of American diplomats toward tribal leaders has led to very strong connections, in particular with the al-Ahmar family, which heads a powerful tribal federation and is among the most potent of the anti-Saleh forces. Despite a warrior-like image reinforced by fierce street battles in the capital, analyst Steinbeiser says the clan’s true interests may be more pragmatic.

“The al-Ahmar family is a family of commerce. They’re a business family, so I think they’re more outward looking than a lot of people in Yemen might otherwise be. They have a number of concerns here in Yemen, including major telephone and cellular telephone networks. And I think that they could get on quite well with U.S. policy if it’s conducted on the level of kind of business, commercial exchange.”

Steinbeiser says that in terms of more complicated issues, he would be surprised if the al-Ahmar clan has formulated many specific policies.

A lack of future policy planning is perhaps understandable among others in the widely divergent array of anti-Saleh forces, focused now almost exclusively on removing the president from power.

But Steinbeiser feels at least in the short run, such groups as the al-Ahmar family, military defectors and the traditional opposition – those engaged in the current negotiations over the transfer of power – are likely to continue the current government’s largely pro-U.S. policy. He says that may extend even to many Islamist groups, not the extremists, but those who want a religion-based government.

“My impression overall is that all of the groups realize the imperative of trying to keep Yemen as peaceful and stable as possible right now. Even before this political impasse occurred, Yemen was facing surmounting problems that would pressure a more established, richer nation. And to have this kind of political wedge thrown into the works right now is very, very dangerous, and potentially very disruptive to any course of progress in Yemen for any of the groups mentioned.”

While U.S. support of Saleh has bred resentment, the same military and financial aid he has enjoyed could well become building blocks for any future alliances, at least in the short term.

America’s extensive yet friction-laden economic relationship with China will be the focus of debate in the U.S. Senate this week, as it considers a bill to penalize Beijing for allegedly manipulating China’s currency, the yuan, to benefit domestic exports and disadvantage foreign imports.

China’s export strategy

U.S. officials have long complained that China intentionally maintains an undervalued yuan as part of an aggressive – some might say predatory – export promotion strategy.

<!–IMAGE-LEFT–>

“China’s exchange rate policy is unfair, and hurts the interests of American producers,” said Timothy Geithner, U.S. Treasury Secretary.

A bill garnering bipartisan support in the Senate would treat currency manipulation as a foreign subsidy, triggering U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods.

‘Illegal’ measures

“China illegally subsidizes their industries,” said Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York, who is a sponsor of the Currency Exchange Rate Oversight Reform Act.
“They underpay their workers. They skirt environmental regulations, and ignore the tenets of global trade rule after trade rule after trade rule. They get away with economic murder.”

Schumer says China’s currency practices have cost the United States more than two million jobs over the last decade.

Also backing the bill is Republican Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who says it is time for the United States to defend its interests.

“During these tough economic times, we ought not to allow any of our trading partners to rig the game in their favor,” he said. “It is the job of American officials to defend the just and fundamental interests of the American workforce.”

Trade worries

Some U.S. industries squeezed by Chinese competition have welcomed the bill. But 50 trade groups representing many of America’s most vibrant export industries have written a letter to Senate leaders arguing the legislation would invite Chinese retaliation and should be rejected.

Trade expert Dan Ikenson of the Washington-based Cato Institute agrees.

“If we do something unilateral, we risk U.S. export sales to China and the jobs that go with it,” said Ikenson.

He says the World Trade Organization would likely reject an American bid to treat currency manipulation as a subsidy. Beyond that, Ikenson says, the bill before the Senate demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of trade in an inter-dependent, globalized economy.

“It used to be the case that it was our producers against their producers,” he added. “But now we have globalization, and there is a lot of value-added from different countries in products that we import from China, that are snapped together [assembled] in China, for example. So currency values cut in many different ways.”

Ikenson warns against sabotaging a vast and increasingly-lucrative export market for the United States, something highlighted by U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner while testifying on Capitol Hill last year.

“China is now consuming more and importing more from the United States,” he said. “As a result, China’s overall trade surplus has fallen sharply, by roughly half as a share of its economy. U.S. exports to China have rebounded much more rapidly than overall U.S. exports to the world.”

Chinese currency

<!–IMAGE-RIGHT–>

The Obama administration says China’s currency remains undervalued, but has not endorsed the Senate bill. Chinese officials argue against politicizing trade issues, and point out that, in fact, the yuan has gradually appreciated in value since 2005.

That slow appreciation does not appear to satisfy U.S. lawmakers. With the 2012 general election looming, some legislators seem eager for a fight that will allow them to point fingers and assign blame for America’s economic woes.

Should the bill pass in the Democratic-led Senate, its enactment is far from certain. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives has not indicated it will take up the legislation.

Butch Johnson (CT) is fifty-six, and after five Olympic Games and two Olympic medals, he seeks his sixth nomination. Between the two, there is an age gap of thirty eight years and hundreds of tournaments, but they have one thing in common: they are among the top three archers in their respective categories following the end of the first Nomination Shoot for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Archery. And they both know that this early, it’s anyone’s game on this journey to London.

Several hundred anti-Wall Street protestors were arrested Saturday evening as they attempted to march across the Brooklyn Bridge.

The “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrators forced the temporary closure of the bridge as they rallied against what they said was corporate greed, social inequality and other issues.

New York police said they arrested some of the protestors when they broke off from the bridge’s pedestrian lane and onto the roadway, blocking traffic.

The Brooklyn Bridge was shut down for several hours but has since reopened.

The “Occupy Wall Street” website describes the protest as a “leaderless movement,” and members have been camped out near New York City’s Financial District for the past two weeks.

In Boston, a similar “Take Back Boston” march rallied against the city’s Bank of America’s offices and more than 20 protestors were arrested.

Article Content: Swin Cash (Seattle Storm) scored a team-high 17 points to lead the 2011 USA Basketball Women’s National Team (2-0) to a hard-fought 78-68 victory over Ros Casares Valencia (1-1) in Monte di Procida, Italy. In the earlier game, Famila Schio (1-1) utilized a 21-8 third-quarter to bypass host Pallacanestro Pozzuoli (0-2) 69-52.

Cash, who averaged 14.5 ppg. and 7.5 rpg. in the two-night, four-team tournament, was named MVP and Brittney Griner (Baylor University) listed as the best post player after averaging 12.5 ppg. and 7.5 rpg. off the bench.

In addition to Cash’s 17 points, the USA’s scoring was paced by 16 from Renee Montgomery (Connecticut Sun). Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun) just missed a double-double after posting 15 points and nine rebounds; Griner, who had three fouls on the books in the first half, finished with 10 points and eight rebounds; Cappie Pondexter (New York Liberty), who was also hampered by three first-half fouls, and Sophia Young (San Antonio Silver Stars) chipped in eight points apiece, while Danielle Robinson (San Antonio Silver Stars) scored four.

“This was a completely different game than last night in the sense that this is one of the top teams in Europe,” said Geno Auriemma, 2009-12 USA National Team and University of Connecticut head coach. “They’re well-drilled. Their coach is excellent. They shot the ball incredibly well in that whole first half. We had some foul problems, but I thought our guys did a great job of attacking them and getting them into foul trouble.

“Swin throughout these past two games has been exactly what Swin’s always been. She’s a high-energy player who’s around the ball all the time and makes big plays. She had a couple offensive rebounds and put-backs that I thought were exactly what we needed when we needed them. She is a leader out there for them.”

Featuring a roster filled with some of the top talent in Europe, including several Olympians and FIBA World Championship participants, Ros Casares was a tough opponent from the start and took an early 7-4 lead four minutes into the game. Cash tied the score at 7-7 after making one of two from the line at 5:13, and Charles followed with a bucket at 4:41 to give the U.S. a lead it would never relinquish.

Going up 21-15 at the end of the first quarter, the U.S. looked to be pulling away after opening the second stanza on a 9-2 run to expand the lead to 30-17 with 7:30 to go before halftime. However, by that time Pondexter had two fouls and was sent to the bench. Ros Casares, which connected on five 3-pointers in the first half, began to chip away at the lead and cut it to nine points, 42-33, with 2:03 left in the half. Montgomery stepped to the line and gave the U.S. a double-digit lead again, but Ros Casares managed to outscore the U.S. 7-0, which included a perfect 4-of-4 from the line, and at the half the USA’s 13-point lead was cut to four, 44-40.

One of the fouls in the first half was erroneously marked on Griner, giving her three by halftime, and Pondexter picked up her third midway through the second quarter.

“Ros Casares is a very physical team,” said Cash. “They have very good players. We knew, with them having Ann Wauters, that she was going to be a physical presence on the block. I was really just happy with our post players, with Tina, with Brittney, just holding their ground down low, playing solid defense and rebounding the basketball.”

Wauters, who scored 26 points on 11-of-17 from the field and hauled in 16 rebounds, scored her side’s first six coming out of the break and after a Silvia Dominguez three, the Spanish club was on the brink of retaking the lead, having whittled it to one point, 50-49, at 6:50.

A put-back from Charles was followed by a Robinson steal and Montgomery layup as the U.S. got back on track. Ros Casares responded with a pair of threes, which were wedged around another Montgomery fast-break layup, and with 15:13 to play in the contest, the score was 56-55, USA.

“They hit a lot of shots in a row,” said Montgomery. “You know, at a certain point you think, ‘well, not every shot’s going to fall.’ But, for a stretch there, they were really making everything they put up and that’s partly them hitting shots and it’s us also not contesting as much as we should.”

Griner hit a turn-around jumper at the top of the key at 4:05 that keyed a 10-4 American run that gave the red, white and blue some breathing room at the end of the third quarter, 66-59.

Both sides turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, but Ros Casares was only able to narrow the gap to six points, 68-62, after another three at 9:38. The USA countered that with several defensive stops and six consecutive points to go up 74-62 at 7:20 and held off Ros through the remainder of the game.

“We had a stretch there in the second half, where I thought the game was decided,” said Auriemma. “We got five or six shots in a row and converted on three or four of them. I thought that was the deciding factor in the game.”

Ros nailed nine 3-pointers in the contest (9-25 3pt FGs), which helped the Spain team stay close, while the U.S. was 0-of-2 from beyond the arc. However, the USA shot a sizzling 52.6 percent (30-57 FGs) from the field, while limiting Ros Casares to 38.2 percent (26-68 FGs) of its tries. The American women also outrebounded their opponent 41-30.

The U.S. will practice with Pallacanestero Pozzouli on Sunday evening before traveling to Valencia, Spain, for a rematch against Ros Casares on Oct. 5. The squad will then face 2011 Czech league champion ZVVZ-USK Prague in the Czech Republic on Oct. 8; and close out the tour in Hungary against Hungarian Cup and Hungarian Championship winners UNIQA-Euroleasing Sopron on Oct. 9.

“The team’s talking about how great (Ros Casares is) at home and how crazy their fans are,” said Robinson on the Oct. 5 contest against the strong Valencian squad. “So, really we have to go in there rested. Tomorrow will be a great day for us to be kind of light. Then we’ll get there and get some rest. But it’s all about playing hard and just outworking them on every single possession.”

Asjha Jones (Connecticut Sun) has a sore right knee, did not play and is listed as day-to-day.

While the USA’s European tour games are not televised in the U.S., fans can get in-game updates via USA Basketball’s Facebook and Twitter accounts at facebook.com/usabasketball and twitter.com/usabasketball, respectively.

Doug Bruno (DePaul University), Jennifer Gillom, who will also serve as an assistant coach for the 2011 USA Pan American Games Team, are assisting Auriemma and the USA National Team during its 2011 European tour.

Four-time defending Olympic gold medalists, the U.S. will look to capture a fifth straight gold medal and extend its 33-game Olympic winning streak at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London. The Olympic basketball competition will be held July 28-Aug. 12 in the Olympic Park Basketball Arena and North Greenwich Arena. Four countries have claimed spots in the eventual 12-nation field, including host country Great Britain; the United States, which earned its berth by virtue of earning the gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championship; China, winner of the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship; and Russia, winner of the 2011 EuroBasket. Three additional teams will earn spots this year by claiming gold at the remaining two zone qualifying tournaments, FIBA Africa and FIBA Oceania, while the final five teams will earn their spots at the 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament (June 21-July 1 at a site TBD).

(ARA) – So you’ve just tied the knot, or will soon wed, and you realize that mealtime (among other things) is about to change. If you have any jitters about cooking for two, rest assured that setting up a kitchen and cooking delicious meals – no matter what your budget or time constraints – are well within reach.

Essential kitchen tools

If you’re lucky, you received most of what you need to set up a kitchen as wedding or shower gifts. Here’s a rundown of the very basics. You can add to your supplies down the road, once you see what kind of cooking you most enjoy (a wok if you rely on stir fry and a crepe pan if you fancy crepes for Sunday breakfast, for example).

For now, you can tackle just about any recipe if you have:

* A couple of basic pots (one large enough to make pasta and a medium-size one for sauces and steaming veggies)

* A skillet

* A casserole dish

* Measuring cups and spoons

* One large and one small mixing bowl

* Wooden spoons, a good can opener, a slotted spoon, a ladle, rubber spatulas and a metal spatula

* A cutting board and a good chef’s knife, a paring knife, a vegetable peeler and a grater

* Baking pans: one 9-by-13-inch, two round cake pans, a pie pan, a couple of cookie sheets, a pizza pan and a loaf pan

* Storage containers and recycling bins

The spice rack

It needn’t be a rack, of course, but a solid collection of spices will be necessary for cooking from recipes and can help you transform ordinary fare into very special – even signature – dishes. Stock a handful of basics, then build your selection. Store them away from heat and light (not over your stove).

A good start would be: basil, bay leaves, cayenne, chives, cinnamon, cumin, garlic powder, marjoram, oregano, paprika, parsley, pepper, rosemary, sage, tarragon, thyme, turmeric and, of course, salt and black pepper.

If you have an ongoing gift registry, you might add Simply Organic’s Spice Rack with Spices. It provides 16 basic spices, including Daily Grind Black Peppercorns and Grind to a Salt blend.

For convenience (and reliability), stock plenty of ready-to-use spice blends, too, such as all-purpose seasoning, chili powder, curry powder, Italian seasoning, Mexican seasoning, and pumpkin pie spice.

Recipes

Deciding what to have for dinner needn’t be a hassle. It’s helpful to plan your menus for the week ahead, both for shopping ease and peace of mind.

Start by relying on basic recipes. Maybe you have some that have been passed down in your family. Or maybe you’re teaching yourself now. You might want to set aside one day a week to try a brand new recipe, such as a new ethnic dish or something you saw on a cooking show or website. If it works, add it to your repertoire.

You can also greatly vary your basic recipes, such as potato, pasta and egg dishes, just by experimenting with seasonings and other toppings. If you know how to cook pasta (and if you don’t, just follow the directions on the package and you’ll nail it), you can make myriad dishes by choosing a variety of pastas in various shapes. Then mix things up by seasoning your sauces differently: add basil, garlic powder and thyme to your tomato sauce one day and oregano, garlic granules and basil another. For a white sauce, try tarragon, paprika and parsley or marjoram, dill weed and chives. If you’re going for convenience, simply choose a blend such as Italian seasoning, and you’re good to go.

You can find some good “beginner” recipes on Simply Organic’s recipe website, which, for convenience, creatively use mixes and blends. You can also download the company’s free recipe app for your iPhone, iPad, and/or iPod Touch.

Take shortcuts

Speaking of mixes and blends, if you haven’t noticed, they’re not just for dessert anymore. You’ll find convenient, healthful mixes and blends for everything from sauces and dips to main dishes, side dishes and, yes, desserts. If you don’t have the time and inclination to spend hours in the kitchen mastering recipes, it’s mixes and blends to the rescue. Even if you enjoy spending time in the kitchen, mixes are great when you need a dish done faster.

Here are a couple easy-to-assemble recipes that you can use to put a complete, scrumptious dinner on the table.

Homestyle Meatloaf

Ingredients:

1 pound lean ground beef

1 cup bread crumbs

1 egg

1/4 cup ketchup

1 package Simply Organic Sloppy Joe Mix

1/4 cup water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 F. In a large mixing bowl, combine beef, bread crumbs, egg and ketchup. In a small bowl, dissolve Sloppy Joe Mix in water. Add liquid mix to beef mixture and knead into a loaf shape. Place on cookie sheet or in oven-safe pan and bake for 45 minutes.

Creamy Mashed Potato Casserole

Ingredients:

3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and diced into 1-inch pieces

1 package Simply Organic French Onion Dip Mix

1/2 cup sour cream

1/2 cup cream cheese

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup butter, cut into pieces

Directions:

Place potatoes in a large pot. Cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a fork. While potatoes are cooking, combine dip mix, sour cream, cream cheese, and salt. Stir until well mixed, and set aside.

When potatoes are tender, drain off the water. Add the sour cream mixture and butter to the potatoes. Mash potatoes using a hand-held mixer or potato masher. Place in a greased 3-quart casserole dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes, uncovered.

(ARA) – The average wedding now costs more than $25,000, multiple studies show. Few couples starting their lives together have that kind of cash, and many will fund their weddings – wholly or in part – with credit. While it’s normal to want the wedding of your dreams, your special day shouldn’t lead to years of unmanageable debt.

Money problems, including too much debt, can cause significant disharmony in a marriage and can even lead to divorce. Fortunately, some careful budgeting and smart use of credit can help you prevent wedding-induced money problems from interfering with your marital bliss.

As soon as you set a wedding date, you need to begin thinking about and discussing how you’ll pay for your big day. Your conversation should encompass several key financial talking points, including:

* Credit – Discuss candidly how you’ve both used it in the past, how you’ll use it going forward and what, if any, role credit will play in funding your wedding. If you haven’t already done it, exchange your credit scores, and discuss how you both arrived at your respective credit statuses.

Consider enrolling together in a credit monitoring product. Keeping a close eye on your credit leading up to marriage may help you better understand if and how you should use credit in funding your wedding. Websites like Freecreditscore.com allow you to see your credit score, which is a snapshot of your credit. The site’s Credit Score Center can help you understand how your score works, how it’s calculated, what factors impact it and when is the best time to apply for credit.

* Budgeting – A budget will be key to financial security throughout your married life. Establishing and sticking to a budget for your wedding is not only a good way to avoid overspending, it’s a good team-building exercise for future spouses. You can learn a lot about each other based on how you manage your wedding-planning budget.

For example, every budget includes income. You’ll need to realistically discuss your wedding “income” – funding sources you can rely on to help defray the overall wedding cost. Will your parents contribute? Will you dip into some savings? Will you pay for some things with credit?

* Savings – Saving money is often an exercise in compromise. For example, you may want a new car, but to save money you may buy a slightly used one instead of a current model. Saving money on wedding costs is the same. You’ll need to look for creative ways to save money.

Fortunately, there are many ways to do this. Changing the time of your wedding to off-peak seasons or days of the week, opting to hold it at a different venue like a park, botanical garden or even a zoo, choosing less-costly dinner selections and even making invitations and favors yourself, can all save you money.

Many people find it difficult to reconcile the idea of financial matters and romance. But don’t underestimate the romantic appeal of starting out your life together free of wedding debt. Having good credit, solid credit scores and little or no debt can be a great foundation for creating financial bliss in your marriage.
